Digital Camera Guide for Photography Courses in London

DSLR photography, cameras buying guide

DSLR is short for digital single lens reflex. This means that that when you look through the viewfinder you are looking directly through the camera lens. This enables exact framing of a photograph. These digital cameras have interchangeable lenses.

Picture quality, file size and image resolution is better than compact or bridge cameras. Exposure has a greater dynamic range and you are less limited when it comes to capturing tricky shots.

When you first buy a DSLR you may wish to start with an entry level camera. Examples of entry level is Canon 450D, 500D, 550D or Nikon D3000, D5000, D60. Sony, Pentax and Olympus also manufacture good digital SLR cameras.

Nikon D5000 has live view, movie mode and tilt LCD screen

There are many decisions, - live view, full HD movie mode, tilt and shift LCD screens, and many manufacturers to choose from. Entry level cameras are relatively light weight compared to semi-professional and full frame digital SLRs. Budget around £400 - £500+ for an entry level DSLR.

If you are not ready to buy yet why not hire a camera and learn photography while you find out more what you want from a DSLR. Have a look at our Digital Camera Hire Page and join our London photography courses today.

Semi professional DSLR cameras usually have a rotating control wheel on the back of a camera rather than a 4 wheel controller with up/down, left/right control points. The sensors on these cameras are larger and capture increased tonal ranges. Budget around £750+ for a semi-professional DSLR.

The majority of digital SLRs have a cropped sensor. Examples of full frame sensors are Canon 5D, 5D MarkII, Nikon D700, Sony Alpha 900. Full frame DSLRs have large sensors and a greater dynamic range of exposure combinations. Never be afraid of high ISO with a full frame DSLR. Expect to pay 2K+ for a full frame DSLR.

We recommend that you buy your camera from stockists who do not sell grey imports. Check that the warranty is valid for the country in which you live - otherwise you will be responsible for shipping costs on a warranty return. You might also get a camera manual in a language you do not speak.
