Welcome to London Photo Tours

(in Dartmoor)

Dartmoor faqs

Q). One week seems along time to stay in one place - won't the views get repetitive after a while?

A). We are after images of "being there" rather than shots of "passing through" - we believe that you need to spend some time in a place to get the best photos. We don't find Dartmoor repetitive - the light changes all the time and there are plenty of different views - hills, reservoir lakes, stone circles and ponies etc.

Q). In addition to my camera gear what else should I bring with me?

Walking boots - these should be bought and worn in for a week before the tour.

Tripod - if you want the steadiest shots, especially at low light then we recommend a tripod, although there are very many rocks to steady yourself against.

Backpack - to carry water and snacks and of course your camera gear

Weatherproof clothing, including jacket and waterproof trousers. The latter is essential for early morning shots as the Moor is covered in mist and dew. Waterproofs enable you to kneel etc without getting wet.

Best to have :

Gaiters, if wearing shorts or lightweight trousers.

Walking Poles - if you need extra leverage.

Spare shoes to wear around towns and the hotel.

Hat - It can be windy high on the Tors and you will want to keep your ears warm and your hair out of eyes!

Ron has a map, compass and GPS for keeping track, which allows us to go with the views (and get back). Your own mobile phone may be handy also: we shouldn't lose touch visually, but it helps to be prepared.

For those with film cameras it can be difficult to get any film other than ordinary ISO 400, so if you want professional film or a lower ISO (recommended) then please bring your film with you. We have at times found it difficult to buy 100 ISO film even at main camera stores in London. You should allow for taking more than you usually do.

For those with digital cameras it is always handy to carry spare batteries and a couple of memory cards to ensure that you don't run out during a photo shoot. Please remember to bring your battery charger.

Q). I have the idea that Dartmoor is boggy ground that I may sink into - is this true ?

A). Not on the parts we explore - it is firm under foot - you would need walking boots rather than Wellingtons.

Q). Can I feed the horses or other animals?

A). No, please don't - it makes them hang around on the roads which is dangerous for them. We will get plenty of photos of horses, ponies, sheep and cattle wandering freely, in any case.
